The challenge

The hospital gives medical care in a rural area where the grid can't be relied on. It needed a system that keeps critical services running around the clock, can grow with the hospital, and can be run by its own technical team.

The solution for the rural hospital in Bauchi

• Solar array: 96 × 555 Wp JinkoSolar monocrystalline modules, 53.28 kWp
• Battery inverters: 6 × Victron Quattro 10 kVA, 60 kVA
• PV inverter: 1 × Fronius Eco 27 kW (AC-coupled)
• Charge controllers: 6 × Victron SmartSolar MPPT 250/100 (DC-coupled)
• Energy storage: 8 × BYD Premium LVL 15.4 kWh, 123.2 kWh lithium
• Power room: containerised, temperature-controlled enclosure

The raised mounting structure keeps modules secure and easy to clean. AC + DC coupling splits the array between the Fronius inverter and Victron MPPT chargers for resilience and daytime efficiency. The air-conditioned container protects inverters and batteries from heat and dust.

Delivery

• Work started on 29 April 2024 and the system was commissioned on 7 June 2024, five weeks and four days from start to handover.
• The commissioning report was reviewed and approved by the client's energy specialist.
• A phase 2 upgrade was handed over in August 2024.

Results

Designed for growth. Peak demand rose from about 15.6 kW at the first survey to about 31 kW by completion. Our commissioning review spotted this early and set out a clear upgrade path: more PV, a second PV inverter and more storage.

Reliable power for patient care, from a system the hospital's technical team was trained to run and maintain.
